Experience the rich fantasy world created by J.R.R. Tolkien in his epic tale The Hobbit at the Davis Food Co-op’s “Hobbit for Grown Ups” cooking demonstration tomorrow! The event will take place on Thursday, March 5, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Blanchard Room of the Mary L. Stephens Davis Branch Library, located at 315 E. 14th St in Davis, California.

Savor the delicious, earthy scents and tastes of the shire as interpreted by the Davis Food Co-op’s Teaching Kitchen wizards. Sample a hearty fare of mushroom stew paired with crusty bread, the cheeses and pickles found in every hobbit’s larder, and a simple stove top grunt made with the shire’s best apples and honey. Learn how to prepare food fit for a daring magical quest complete with hobbits, dwarves, goblins and dragons. See how it’s done, try samples and take home the recipes.

“The best fantasy fiction builds a richly imagined world that the reader is reluctant to part with once the book ends,” said Yolo County Librarian Patty Wong. “Our ‘Cook the Book’ series with the Davis Food Co-op gives the reader the tools to extend the experience through menus evocative of that particular place and time.”

No reservations are required. Presented by the Yolo County Library, all programs free.

image Author: Lily Milos[13] Lily’s first experience with Tolkien was when the eccentric Mrs. H performed all of the characters from The Hobbit in her seventh grade class. In high school, she felt obliged to decline a second date with a boy who said he had no interest in reading The Lord of the Rings. In college, she unwisely decided to reread her beloved copy of The Hobbit during finals week, with only semi-disastrous results. When not writing for Middle-earth News, Lily tries not to unnerve her coworkers and family with her extreme geekery, but somehow, Star Wars, Star Trek, Sherlock, Merlin, Doctor Who, The Princess Bride, Back to the Future, superheroes, Disney movies, and of course, Tolkien, seem to have relevance in EVERY conversation.
