The hobbits finally reach Tom Bombadil’s home after their adventure in the Old Forest and are welcomed by a delicious supper.

A door opened and in came Tom Bombadil. He had now no hat and his thick brown hair was crowned with autumn leaves. He laughed, and going to Goldberry, took her hand.

‘Here’s my pretty lady!’ he said, bowing to the hobbits. ‘Here’s my Goldberry clothed all in silver-green with flowers in her girdle! Is the table laden? I see yellow cream and honeycomb, and white bread, and butter; milk, cheese, and green herbs and ripe berries gathered. Is that enough for us? Is the supper ready?’

imageHop along, my hearties! Tonight our host is Tom Bombadil himself and I prepared a simple but delicious meal, following Tolkien’s guidelines.

Freshly baked bread and some butter accompanied by rhododendron honey are the perfect way to spoil a hobbit’s belly alongside a tasty glass of milk. Since Tom Bombadill dwells in the forest, you could add some berries and green herbs (salad, perhaps?) to your meal. I decided to try something different using a pomegranate, because it’s a delicious fruit to enjoy on its own or to add to the yellow cream.

My yellow cream recipe is a revisited version of the classic custard.

  • 2 egg yolks
  • 4 tablespoons of sugar
  • 2 tablespoons of flour
  • a pinch of salt
  • 500 ml (17 oz) of milk
  • lemon zest

Mix well the eggs, sugar and a pinch of salt with a whisk and then add the flour too. In the meantime, put the milk and the lemon zest in a small pot to heat. Once it’s boiling, pour your mixed ingredients in your pot and keep mixing them with the milk very well with the help of the whisk, to avoid any lumps. Keep blending your cream on the burner for a couple of minutes, until it starts to swell a little bit, then pour it in a couple of little bowls and let it cool before you serve.

This is a quick and easy way to treat some hungry hobbits that unexpectedly knocked at your door in the middle of the evening!
