It is always great news when a book on JRR Tolkien gets a reprint, especially if it is one of the better resources.

I have already announced that Tolkien and the Great War by John Garth is being reprinted in paperback by HarperCollins - it's due out on 28 April. On the same day we will see a reprint of J.R.R. Tolkien: A Biography by Humphrey Carpenter. Garth's book saw some corrections, so I hope the same happens for this new reprint! We can only hope of course... only wondering who could be asked to do such corrections?

The cover will probably be revamped since as for now I believe this ISBN was only used for the special edition to commemorate 25 years since Tolkien's Death. First thought would be that this reprint would be to commemorate 40 years since Tolkien sailed to the Aman. But that would be 2 years early... so I'm very much looking forward to the new cover. Who know's we get to see a picture by Tolkien we have not seen on a book cover yet?

Seems like Apri is once again the month we see paperback editions being released. So I'll look forward to see some other books that could use a reprint to be announced real soon. I'm especially keen to learn what will happen with Letters by J.R.R. Tolkien, since that book was released exactly 30 years ago! And I know there are literary millions of Tolkien fans who look forward to see a second volume released. But then again it is good to have some dreams left... let us wait and see what happens!

Review of Tolkien and the Great War

I reviewed the book a long time ago, but you can still find it here: review of J.R.R. Tolkien: a Biography.

Commemorating nearly 40 years since Tolkien's Death

The original authorised biography, and the only one written by an author who actually met J.R.R. Tolkien, reset and reissued in B format.

In nearly 40 years since Tolkien’s death in September 1973, millions have read The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings and The Silmarillion and become fascinated about the very private man behind the books.

Born in Bloemfontein in January 1892, John Ronald Reuel Tolkien was orphaned in childhood, brought up in near-poverty and almost thwarted in adolescent romance. He served in the First World War, surviving the Battle of the Somme, where he lost some of his closest friends, and returned to academic life, achieving high repute as a scholar and university teacher, eventually becoming Merton Professor of English at Oxford.

Then suddenly his life changed dramatically. One day while marking essay papers he found himself writing ‘In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit’ – and worldwide renown awaited him.

Humphrey Carpenter was given unrestricted access to all Tolkien’s papers, and interviewed his friends and family. From these sources he follows the long and painful process of creation that produced The Lord of the Rings and The Silmarillion and offers a wealth of information about the life and work of the twentieth century’s most cherished author.
