Dutch Tolkien books - PART 7: 'Other works by Tolkien translated to Dutch' (29.07.05 by Johan Vanhecke) - Comments

Smith of Wootton Major.

[C1] De Smid van Groot-Wolding.

De Smid van Groot-Wolding. Translated by W. Wielek-Berg. Utrecht/Antwerpen: Het Spectrum, 1968. Paperback, dust-jacket. 44 + [4] pp., 22.2 x 13.7 cm.

This first edition was produced by Het Spectrum as a public relations gift and was not for sale in bookshops.

The paper cover is plain rose-red. The dust-jacket is greyish-beige with the author's name in red and the title in black on the upper cover and spine (see image, click for enlargement). There are no illustrations.

[C2] De Smid van Groot-Wolding.

De Smid van Groot-Wolding. Translated by W. Wielek-Berg. Utrecht/Ant-werpen: Het Spectrum, 1977. Hardcover. 21.4 x 13.4 cm. ISBN 90-274-4231-2.

The pagination is strange: the first numbered page is '7' after only the front free endpaper, and one page with the title on the recto and a copyright notice etc. on the verso. It then numbers through to 53 on the recto of the back free endpaper.

This is called the third printing, so presumably Sprookjes [D1] was considered the second printing.

It has a coloured cover, and black and white endpapers and 18 illustrations within the text by Walt de Rijk. The wraparound cover shows Smith and the Fairy Queen silhouetted against a starry sky (see image, click for enlargement). On the spine and against the ground at the bottom of the upper cover is the title and the author's name in white.

[C3] De Smid van Groot-Wolding.

De Smid van Groot-Wolding . Translated by Max Schuchart. Amsterdam: Uitgeverij M, 2003. 21.5 x 13.5, 91 + [5] pp.. Hardcover. ISBN 90-225-3756-0.

First printing as a children's edition. The book also contains Boer Gilles van Ham.

The cover illustration is by Omar Rayyar, showing a smith and a unicorn (see image, click for enlargement). Contents: pp. 5-36: De smid van Groot-Wolding ; pp. 37-91: Boer Gilles van Ham.

Fairy Tales.

Three of Tolkien's shorter stories appeared in one-volume entitled Sprookjes van Tolkien: Smith ofWootton Major (De Smid van Groot-Wolding), Farmer Giles of Ham (Boer Gilles van Ham), and Leaf by Niggle (Blad van Klein).

[D1] Sprookjes van Tolkien.

Sprookjes van Tolkien. Translated by W. Wielek-Berg. Utrecht/Antwerpen: Het Spectrum. 1971. 'Prisma' 1500. Paperback. 144 pp. 18.0 x 10.8 cm. ISBN 90-274-0627-8.

Printed on the upper cover is a photograph of a small tree against the sun, with the title in white (see image, click for enlargement).

The spine and lower cover are black with white lettering. Smith of Wootton Major is on pp. 7-46, Farmer Giles of Ham on pp. 47-114, and Leaf by Niggle on pp. 115-44. Three illustrations by Pauline Baynes from Farmer Giles are reproduced on pp. 3, 7, and 47. On page 115 at the beginning of Leaf by Niggle is an awkward angular tree by an unnamed artist, roughly based on Baynes' illustration of Garm finding Chrysophylax's tail coiled around a tree.

For some strange reason, this book was reset for its second printing in 1972, though it had the same cover and kept the same 'Prisma' and ISBN numbers. It was also 18.0 x 10.8 cm. but had 152 pp.: Smith ofWootton Major on pp. 7-47, Farmer Giles of Ham on pp. 49-119, and Leaf by Niggle on pp. 121-52. The same illustrations appeared on pp. 3, 7, 49, i2i.

The reset version was reprinted in 1972, 1974, 1975, and 1977.

It was reprinted again in 1979 and 1981 with a Studio Spectrum cover with a dark green ground and the tide in blue. The Tolkien illustration in the medallions on the upper cover and spine is a detail of The Elvenking's Gate. There were also two hardcover editions which included On Fairy-Stories (Over sprookjes-verhalen) translated by Max Schuchart, as well as slightly revised texts of the three stories from the earlier edition.

Bound in light green cloth with the publisher's name and the title stamped in silver on the spine. The dust-jacket by Guusje Kaayk is shaded blue, and on the upper cover shows Niggle standing before his painting which is framed in an oval of leaves. The publisher's name and the title are printed in black on the spine. On the lower cover is a blurb in black on a shaded green ground within an oval of leaves. The book is bound in blue cloth with the Tolkien-logo blind-stamped on the upper cover, and the publisher's name, the Tolkien-logo, and the title stamped in silver on the spine. It has a blue Studio Spectrum dust-jacket with the title in red. The illustration in the medallion on the front is a detail from Tolkien's Glorund Sets Forth to Seek Turin (see image, click for enlargement). The smaller medallion on the spine has the heraldic device of Melian. At first a dust-jacket with another type of lettering and with the drawing of Glorund in full was designed, but I am not sure that it was ever executed.

On both covers and the spine the title is printed in blue and the author's name in green.

Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien .

[L1] Brieven.

Brieven. Translated by Max Schuchart. Utrecht/Antwerpen: Het Spectrum, 1982. Hardcover, dust-jacket. 588 + [4] pp. 19.5 x 11.0 cm. ISBN 90-274-7113-4.

Bound in brown cloth, with the Tolkien-logo blind-stamped on the upper cover and the publisher's name, the Tolkien-logo, and the title stamped in silver on the spine.

The Studio Spectrum dust-jacket has a brown ground with the title and (on the upper cover the editors' names) in pale purple. In the medallions on the upper cover and spine is a detail of Tolkien's letter to Charles Furth. The letter is printed in full as the frontispiece (see image, click for enlargement). Het Spectrum made their own index. A comparison gives very strange results. On the one hand, the Dutch index is much more complete, especially in the section referring to Tolkien's works; on the other hand, the English indexes on Tolkien, Lewis etc. are more detailed. It is very useful to combine both indexes to get the most out of this book. (There is of course since 1995 a new expanded index to the letters, compiled by Wayne Hammond & Christina Scull.)

[L2] Brieven.

Brieven. Samengesteld door Humphrey Carpenter & Christopher Tolkien. Translated by Max Schuchart. [Utrecht]: Het Spectrum, 2001. 21.0 x 13.0, 600 pp. ISBN 90 274 7248 3

First printing in the revised translation, in the paperback series with the white covers.

The upper cover has an illustration by Carol Emery Phenix (Gandalf), once in full and once a detail from it, Gandalf's pipe, and a blurb. Tolkien's name and the title of the book are printed in gold, the name of the publisher in black (see image, click for enlargement).

On the spine is again Gandalf's pipe, the title and Tolkien's name in gold, and the Spectrum device in black. The lower cover has again the pipe, and the blurb, title, Tolkien's name and the publisher's data in black, and the Tolkien monogram in red-brown.

The title on the cover reads: "Brieven / Samengesteld door ./ Christopher Tolkien en Humphrey Carpenter" With a double index. The frontispiece gives the letter to C.A. Furth, 4 February 1938, in facsimile.
